Mercury Through the Twelve Houses and Through Every Sign

Mercury rules talking, thinking and learning. It's how you take things in and how you get them back out again.

When Mercury turns up in your birth chart, it lands in one of the twelve houses, and that tells you where it plays out in your life. It also carries the flavour of the zodiac sign it was in when you were born, and that tells you how it plays out. Both matter. The house is the stage, the sign is the costume, and Mercury is the actor.

Below are twelve readings, one for each house, showing where Mercury lives in your chart. After that comes a quick sign-by-sign take on how the same Mercury comes across in each part of the zodiac. Read both and you'll see more than either one tells you alone.

What Mercury does as it moves through the houses

Mercury moves with the houses as a messenger on a circuit. In the 1st, it speaks through the body. In the 2nd, it counts and appraises. In the 3rd, it is in its own parish of neighbourhood and kin. In the 4th, it thinks about home. In the 5th, it plays. In the 6th, it sorts the daily work. In the 7th, it negotiates. In the 8th, it investigates what is hidden. In the 9th, it chews over the big questions. In the 10th, it takes the public word. In the 11th, it conspires with friends. In the 12th, it thinks in pictures, dreams and silence.

Mercury through the twelve signs

The zodiac sign your Mercury was in at birth colours the energy. Fire signs act it out, earth signs build with it, air signs talk about it, water signs feel it. The same Mercury placement reads very differently across signs.

  • Mercury in Aries: Quick mind, quick mouth. You think out loud and the first answer is usually the real one.
  • Mercury in Taurus: Slow, deliberate, retentive. Once you've understood something, you keep it.
  • Mercury in Gemini: Curious, agile, hungry for the next thing. You learn by talking.
  • Mercury in Cancer: Thinking is feeling. You remember what mattered, in the order it mattered.
  • Mercury in Leo: Thinking has a stage. You want your ideas seen, not just heard.
  • Mercury in Virgo: Thinking sorts and prunes. You edit in real time.
  • Mercury in Libra: Thinking sees both sides, sometimes both at once. You are slow to decide because the decision matters.
  • Mercury in Scorpio: Thinking goes underneath. You don't say the first thing, you say the true thing.
  • Mercury in Sagittarius: Thinking is the long view, the big idea, the joke that lands.
  • Mercury in Capricorn: Thinking is serious and practical. You want it useful.
  • Mercury in Aquarius: Thinking is original, a little sideways, often ahead of the room.
  • Mercury in Pisces: Thinking is image and symbol before it is word. You know things you can't yet say.

The per-house readings are below and on the in-house pages. To find which sign your Mercury was in, calculate your chart. The calculator gives you the sign, the house and a one-paragraph reading for each planet.

The Mercury cycle and what it asks of you right now

Mercury's own orbit is 88 days, but it retrogrades for about three weeks every four months. Transits of the natal Mercury sign are short, two to three weeks. The retrograde seasons are the time to revise, review and revisit, and the direct seasons are the time to launch. Watch where Mercury is transiting your chart, not just the zodiac sign in the news.

Questions people ask about Mercury

Is Mercury retrograde really that bad?

Mercury retrograde is the season of review. Things slow down, get tangled and come back up from the past. It's poor for launching and good for revising. Most of the doom the papers hang on it is a modern invention, and I've lived through enough of them to know.

What is my Mercury sign?

Your Mercury sign is the zodiac sign Mercury was transiting when you were born. It's how you think and talk. Mercury changes sign every few weeks, so people born a few weeks apart in the same Sun sign often have different Mercury signs.

Can Mercury be in retrograde at birth?

Yes, about 20% of the time Mercury is retrograde in the natal chart. Natal Mercury retrograde people are often the deep, careful, second-thought thinkers. It is not a flaw.

What is Mercury in the 3rd house?

The 3rd house is Mercury's own house of communication, learning, and neighbours. Mercury here tends to make a quick, curious, locally-rooted mind. It's one of the more common Mercury placements.

Understanding Planetary Placements

Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. Each planet stands for a different part of you, and the houses show where in your life each one does its work. Once you know where they all sit, a lot of things about yourself start to make sense. I've seen it happen across the table more times than I can count.

The sign your Mercury was in tells you the style, meaning how it comes out. The house it sits in tells you the stage, the part of life where it tends to show up. Aspect patterns to other planets (conjunctions, trines, squares) add a third layer: how it gets along with the rest of you.
