What Is Mercury Retrograde?

When a planet goes "retrograde," it seems to move backward in the sky as we see it from Earth. It's a trick of the eye, caused by the planets moving round the Sun at different speeds. In fifty-odd years of watching them, though, I've found the astrological effect is real enough.
